7:00 – 8:30 PM

Sauna Society Steam Session featuring seasonal aromatherapy
with John Pederson

(Space for the steam session will be limited to the first 20 to reserve their spots using the reservation link below)

Inspired by the German Aufguss tradition, Sauna Society Steam Sessions incorporate Aufguss aromatherapy with new contrast therapies such as Wim Hoff breathing and the ice bath recovery to trigger the full mental and physical benefits of the sweat bathing experience.

Aufguss helps practitioners enjoy the full physiology of hot/cold conditioning through sauna.  During these guided steam sessions the host (or Saunameister) gradually increases the intensity of the experience by adding steam to the rocks. The secret and art of Aufguss is creating and distributing steam in a way that makes the steam soft and relaxing, as well as intense. The softness of the steam, aromatherapy and breathing cues help activate the thermoregulatory system to actively regulate the body’s temperature, which is as helpful for staying cool and comfy in the summer as it is to warming up in the winter.

Guests will enjoy three guided sauna rounds with special “steam recipes,” consisting of water-pouring and steam-throwing techniques with essential oil aromatherapy crafted to increase circulation by activating the body’s thermoregulatory system.

Each steam round is 10 – 15 minutes and is followed by a 20-minute cool down relaxation round and optional ice bath reset.

About this event

The full moon has always been one of my favorite times to enjoy sauna rounds. Moon gazing between rounds adds something undeniably special to the experience. I never thought much beyond that about it until my dear friend Peter Rich died unexpectedly from an asthma attack a year and a half ago.

Peter loved astrology and was always sending updates to my chart as he pieced together another cosmological key to the universe. I have met few people who are as fiercely alive as Peter was, which is probably why I often think of him on the sauna bench (where I feel most alive myself). Since his death, I’ve made a special point to enjoy a good steam with friends every full moon.

Your Hosts

Butaca (aka Paul Frett) is the co-founder and curator of Dance Church Minneapolis. Inspired by Gabrielle Roth and the 5 Rhythms, he sees music as a journey that matches the waves of emotions; from stillness to chaos to joy and back again.

Since building his first sauna in 2014, John Pederson has hosted more than 5,000 guests at venues he has created or managed throughout the Twin Cities. He discovered his passion for sharing the mental, physical and social benefits of sauna in 2015 as the official host of Little Box Sauna and went on to found the nation’s first Sauna Cooperative, the 612 Sauna Society, in 2016 which has introduced thousands to sauna by partnering with local businesses and cultural organizations to create pop-up sauna wellness event experiences throughout the city, including this year’s residency at the Theodore Wirth Trailhead.
